Early 1990s (approximately 1990-1995)
The airfield was closed for economic reasons following the political and economic changes in Bulgaria after 1989. It was primarily an agricultural airfield, and the state-run agricultural aviation system ('Селскостопанска авиация') was dismantled. The transition to a market economy and the breakup of large, state-owned collective farms into smaller private plots rendered the large-scale, centralized crop-dusting operations from such airfields economically unsustainable.
The site is no longer recognizable as an active airfield. The entire area, including the former runway and taxiways, has been completely repurposed and is now occupied by a large-scale photovoltaic power plant (solar farm). The original aviation infrastructure has been removed or is covered by thousands of solar panels, making the site an electricity generation facility.
Topolovgrad Airfield was a key component of Bulgaria's agricultural infrastructure during the socialist era (pre-1989). Its primary function was to serve as a base for agricultural aviation. Operations mainly consisted of crop dusting, spraying, and fertilizing the large collective farms in the region. The airfield typically handled light utility and agricultural aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2 and the Zlín Z-37 Čmelák. It did not serve as a major military base but was part of a vital economic network supporting the country's food production.
There are no plans or realistic prospects for reopening the airfield. The permanent and extensive installation of the solar farm, a significant capital investment, makes a return to aviation activities virtually impossible. Any such project would require the complete and cost-prohibitive removal of the power plant and a full reconstruction of the airfield infrastructure, for which there is no current economic or strategic demand.
