Approximately early to mid-1990s. The closure was not a single event but a gradual process of abandonment following the political and economic changes in Bulgaria.
Primarily economic reasons tied to systemic changes. The airfield was part of the state-run agricultural aviation network ('Selskostopanska Aviatsiya'). This network became economically unviable after the fall of the socialist government in 1989, which led to the dissolution of large collective farms and the subsequent collapse of the state-owned enterprise that provided aerial application services.
The site is derelict and no longer used for aviation. Satellite imagery from recent years shows that a large photovoltaic (solar) power plant has been constructed on the western half of the former runway and adjacent areas. The remaining eastern portion of the runway is visibly cracked, deteriorated, and overgrown with vegetation. The associated hangars and support buildings are abandoned and in a state of disrepair.
During the socialist era (approx. 1960s-1989), Voysil Airfield was a significant local base for agricultural aviation. Its primary function was to support the large-scale collective farms in the highly fertile Upper Thracian Plain, one of Bulgaria's main agricultural regions. Operations consisted almost exclusively of crop dusting, fertilization, and pest control. The fleet would have typically included robust aircraft designed for such tasks, like the Antonov An-2 and the Zlín Z-37 Čmelák. It was a vital piece of infrastructure for the period's state-managed agricultural industry.
None. There are no known official plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening Voysil Airfield. The conversion of a significant part of the runway into a solar farm makes any future use for aviation practically impossible without massive investment to remove the current infrastructure and completely rebuild the airfield.
