Circa late 2019 to early 2020. The heliport was officially decommissioned following the full operational launch of the new central AZ Delta hospital campus in Rumbeke, which occurred in stages and was completed in early 2020.
Functional redundancy due to hospital service centralization. The AZ Delta hospital group constructed a new, state-of-the-art main campus in Rumbeke (Roeselare) and consolidated all its critical care services, including the main emergency department and intensive care units, at this new location. The new Rumbeke campus was built with its own modern rooftop helipad (ICAO: EBZR). This strategic reorganization made the ground-level heliport at the Torhout campus, which no longer housed a primary trauma center, obsolete.
The heliport is permanently closed and its infrastructure has been decommissioned. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the paved landing area still exists, but the 'H' marking has been removed, and the site is no longer maintained as an active heliport. The area has been repurposed as part of the general hospital grounds. The AZ Delta campus in Torhout remains an active medical facility but now focuses on non-critical care, planned procedures, consultations, and rehabilitation services.
The heliport was a private (PPR - Prior Permission Required) facility located on the grounds of the Sint-Rembert General Hospital, which later became the AZ Delta campus in Torhout. Its primary and sole function was to support Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). It served as a critical landing zone for air ambulances transporting seriously injured or ill patients directly to the hospital's emergency and intensive care facilities. For many years, it was an integral part of the regional emergency medical response network, enabling rapid access to advanced medical care.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The closure was a direct result of a long-term strategic decision by the AZ Delta hospital group to centralize its emergency services. All HEMS operations for the region served by the hospital group are now directed to the modern helipad at the main Rumbeke campus, making the Torhout facility permanently redundant.
