Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately March 2021

Reason for Closure

The heliport was not closed due to negative reasons but was part of a planned hospital modernization and expansion. The original ground-level heliport (BE-0029) was decommissioned and replaced by a new, state-of-the-art rooftop helipad built on top of a new wing of the Centre Hospitalier de l'Ardenne (CHA). This relocation was done to improve safety, with clearer approach and departure paths, and to enhance operational efficiency by providing direct, faster access for patients to the hospital's emergency and intensive care units.

Current Status

The site of the former ground-level heliport has been repurposed as part of the hospital's campus. Helicopter operations for the hospital have not ceased; they have been seamlessly transferred to the new, modern rooftop helipad. The physical location of the old helipad is now integrated into the surrounding hospital grounds, which includes new buildings and infrastructure.

Historical Significance

Ardenne Hospital Heliport (BE-0029) was the original ground-level helipad serving the Centre Hospitalier de l'Ardenne in Libramont. Its sole and vital function was to support Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) operations. For many years, it was a critical piece of infrastructure for the province of Luxembourg, a largely rural area, enabling the rapid transport of critically injured or ill patients to the specialized care facilities at the hospital. It served as a key landing zone for medical helicopters like those from the Centre Médical Héliporté (CMH).

Reopening Prospects

There are no prospects for reopening the original BE-0029 heliport. It has been permanently replaced by a superior and safer facility. The identifier BE-0029 is now defunct, and all helicopter services for the Ardenne Hospital now utilize the new rooftop helipad.
