Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Late 2012

Reason for Closure

The airfield's closure was due to a land-use decision by the property owner. The landowner chose not to renew the lease for the flying club that operated the airfield, opting instead to return the land to its primary agricultural purpose. The closure was therefore for economic and land management reasons, not due to an accident, regulatory action, or military conversion.

Current Status

The site has been fully decommissioned and reverted to agricultural land. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the former grass runway has been plowed over and is now indistinguishable from the surrounding cultivated fields. All significant aviation infrastructure, including hangars and the clubhouse, has been removed. The land is actively used for farming.

Historical Significance

Sovet Airfield was a private, recreational airfield that served as a key local hub for ultralight (ULM/microlight) and light general aviation in the province of Namur. It was the home base of the 'Club ULM de la Haute Meuse'. The airfield consisted of a single grass runway, approximately 700 meters long (oriented 06/24), and associated hangars and a clubhouse. Its significance was not in large-scale commercial or military operations, but in its role as a vibrant center for aviation enthusiasts, flight training, and leisure flying in the scenic Condroz region of Wallonia.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Sovet Airfield. The complete conversion of the site back to agriculture and the removal of all essential infrastructure make a future reopening extremely unlikely. It would require re-acquiring the land from its current owner and a complete reconstruction of the runway, hangars, and facilities, which is not considered a viable project.
