Early 1990s, specifically around July 1993.
The airport was destroyed and rendered inoperable following the capture of the city of Agdam by Armenian forces during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Its closure was a direct result of military conflict and the subsequent systematic destruction and abandonment of the entire city, which made any aviation operations impossible.
The airport is completely derelict and non-existent for practical purposes. The site of the former runway and facilities is overgrown, in ruins, and heavily contaminated with landmines and unexploded ordnance, reflecting the widespread destruction of the city. Satellite imagery shows the faint, broken outline of the former runway, but no functional infrastructure remains. The entire area is part of a massive, ongoing demining and reconstruction zone following the return of the Agdam district to Azerbaijani control in November 2020.
During the Soviet era and up until its destruction, Agdam Airport was a small regional airfield. It primarily handled civilian passenger and cargo flights, connecting the city of Agdam and its surrounding agricultural region with Baku and other cities within the Azerbaijan SSR. Operations likely involved small, regional propeller-driven aircraft such as the Antonov An-2 and possibly the Yakovlev Yak-40. It served as a vital transportation link for a city that was once a thriving administrative and economic center with a population of nearly 40,000.
There are no plans to reopen or restore the original, destroyed Agdam Airport. Instead, the government of Azerbaijan is focused on building entirely new infrastructure as part of the large-scale reconstruction of the Karabakh region. While new international airports have already been constructed in nearby Fuzuli (Fuzuli International Airport - FZL) and Zangilan to serve the region, the master plan for the rebuilt city of Agdam includes provisions for a new, modern airport in the future. The timeline for the construction of a new airport specifically for Agdam has not been finalized, as immediate air access to the area is currently provided by the newly built Fuzuli International Airport, located approximately 40 km to the south.
