Taxis are generally available at the airport, especially timed with flight arrivals. They provide transport to the nearby towns of Kokopo and Rabaul. It is highly recommended to negotiate and agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey. Many local hotels also offer pre-booked airport transfer services, which can be a more reliable option.
Car rental services are available, with companies like Avis and several local operators serving the airport. It is strongly advised to book your vehicle in advance. Rental company representatives typically meet customers at the arrivals area to hand over the vehicle, as there may not be a dedicated rental counter within the terminal.
There are no formal, scheduled public bus or train services operating directly from Tokua Airport. The main form of local public transport is the PMV (Public Motor Vehicle), which are privately-owned minibuses. These can sometimes be flagged down on the main road outside the airport, but they operate on informal routes and schedules, making them an unpredictable option for visitors with luggage.
Having spent 2 years living in Rabaul when I was a kid, this is one airport I REALLY hope to be flying into one day soon. My love for Rabaul is so immense, I am now a member of the new Facebook group called Reviving Rabaul ENB. Our aim as a volunteer group is to do whatever we can to help return Rabaul to her former glory. If you feel the same way about our beloved town and want to get involved, come and check us out.
Not as much fun to fly into as the original Rabaul airport. Had 2 wonderful years there.
