Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately June 30, 2005. The airport was officially closed to air traffic to allow for development to commence.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the closure was urban encroachment and land redevelopment. The site was rezoned by the Queanbeyan City Council for a large-scale residential housing project by the Village Building Co. known as 'South Tralee' (and later 'The Poplars'). The growing demand for housing in the region, driven by its proximity to Canberra, made the land more valuable for residential use than for aviation, leading to the decision to close the airfield despite protests from the local aviation community.

Current Status

The site of the former Tralee Airport has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now a suburban residential estate named 'The Poplars'. The former runway, taxiways, and hangars have been entirely removed and replaced by houses, streets (such as 'Tralee Street'), parks, and associated suburban infrastructure. There are no remaining physical traces of the airport.

Historical Significance

Tralee Airport, also known as Tralee Airstrip, was a vital general aviation hub for the Canberra and Queanbeyan region for several decades. It served as a base for private pilots, recreational flying, and flight training schools, most notably the Brindabella Flying School. For many local aviators, it was a more accessible, informal, and affordable alternative to the main Canberra International Airport (YSCB). It played a significant role in fostering the local aviation community and provided crucial infrastructure for light aircraft operations in the Australian Capital Territory region.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening Tralee Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-density residential use, making a return to aviation operations impossible.
