Approximately late 2017. The airport was decommissioned and made redundant upon the opening of the new, larger Wodgina Airport (ICAO: YWOD), which received its first flights in December 2017.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, modern, jet-capable airport. The original airstrip (AU-0692) was unsealed and too short to accommodate the larger aircraft (such as the Airbus A320) needed to support the significantly expanded Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) workforce for the massive Wodgina Lithium Mine expansion project undertaken by Mineral Resources.
The site is permanently closed and non-operational. Satellite imagery confirms the old unsealed runway is still visible but is clearly marked with large, white 'X's at each end, which is the standard aviation visual signal for a closed runway. The land remains part of the active Wodgina Mine lease area and is not used for any public or aviation purpose.
This was a private aerodrome that served as the primary air link to the remote Wodgina Mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Its sole purpose was to facilitate FIFO operations, transporting mine personnel, contractors, and urgent supplies. It typically handled smaller, rugged turboprop charter aircraft capable of landing on unsealed runways. The airstrip was a critical piece of infrastructure that enabled the mine's operation for many years before its major lithium-focused expansion.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. It has been permanently and functionally superseded by the new Wodgina Airport (YWOD), which is located just a few kilometers away and features a long, sealed runway with modern facilities capable of handling large passenger jets. The old airstrip is considered obsolete.
