The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, it is believed to have ceased operations in the late 20th century. Planning documents from the Shire of Gingin in the early 2010s already referred to it as the 'old airstrip', indicating it had been non-operational for a considerable period.
The primary reason for the airport's closure was its location within the boundaries of the Lancelin Defence Training Area (LDTA). This area is owned by the Commonwealth of Australia and is an active, live-fire training range for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The intensification of military exercises made continued civilian aviation operations on the site impractical, incompatible, and unsafe.
The site of the former airport is now entirely part of the restricted Lancelin Defence Training Area. The physical runway is no longer maintained, is heavily overgrown with native vegetation, and is unusable for any type of aircraft. The faint outline of the strip is still visible on satellite imagery. The land is actively used by the Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy, and Royal Australian Air Force for various military training exercises, including live-fire drills. Public access is strictly forbidden.
Lancelin Airport was a small, unsealed general aviation airstrip that served the remote coastal town of Lancelin. In its active years, it supported the local community, which is heavily reliant on fishing and tourism. The airstrip was used by private pilots, for light charter flights, and likely for emergency services such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It provided an important air link for a community that was, at the time, more isolated by land. It was never a commercial airport with scheduled passenger services. The identifier AU-0674 is a non-official code used in aviation databases, not a formal ICAO code, which reflects its status as a minor airfield.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at its original location. Its position within a critical and active military training area makes any future civilian use impossible. The land is owned by the Commonwealth for defence purposes, and this status is not expected to change. Any new airport for the Lancelin community would need to be constructed on a completely new site outside the defence area, and there are currently no known public plans or proposals for such a project.
Does this strip really exist?
