Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

15 December 2008

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the airport's closure was economic and developmental. The land, owned by the Commonwealth of Australia (Department of Defence), was situated in a rapidly expanding corridor of Western Sydney. Its value for residential and commercial real estate development far exceeded its value as a general aviation airport. The Federal Government sold the 80-hectare site to a development consortium for the creation of a new suburb, leading to the permanent cessation of all aviation activities.

Current Status

The airport no longer exists. The entire site has been completely redeveloped into the residential suburb of Middleton Grange. All runways, taxiways, hangars, and associated airport infrastructure have been demolished and replaced by houses, streets, parks, and a small shopping centre. The area's aviation past is commemorated through the street names within the new suburb, which include names like Mustang Street, Spitfire Street, Lockheed Avenue, and Cessna Street.

Historical Significance

Hoxton Park Airport (correct ICAO: YHOX) was originally established during World War II as a satellite dispersal airfield for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Schofields. Following the war, it was decommissioned by the military and transitioned into one of Sydney's most important general aviation (GA) airfields. For over 50 years, it was a major hub for flight training, with numerous flying schools responsible for training thousands of pilots. It also supported private aircraft owners, charter operations, and aircraft maintenance services. The airport, with its two runways, played a critical role in alleviating GA traffic from the larger Bankstown Airport and was a cornerstone of the aviation community in Western Sydney.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening Hoxton Park Airport. The closure was permanent, and the land has been irreversibly transformed into a high-density residential area. It is physically impossible to re-establish an airport at this location. The long-term aviation needs of the region are being addressed through the construction of the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek, located approximately 15 kilometers to the west.

And the first thing they did is bulldoze the runway :/

YHOX IS CLOSED Posted by on June 3, 2009

Closed and sold for industrial land 2008. So ends the history of a useful WW2 vintage airport. Sad to think that the Commonwealth Government sold all three Sydney GA airports to the same greedy organisation.
