Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early to mid-2000s. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airstrip was still clear in the late 1990s but had become significantly overgrown and unusable by 2010, indicating a gradual closure and lack of maintenance during the early 2000s.

Reason for Closure

Incorporation into a national park. The land on which the airstrip is located is now part of Popran National Park, which was established in 1994. The airstrip was likely a private holding that was eventually acquired or fully integrated into the park's management. Once under the control of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), its use as an airfield was discontinued to allow for environmental regeneration and to align with the conservation objectives of the park.

Current Status

The site is completely reclaimed by nature and is an integrated part of Popran National Park. The former runway is no longer a clearing; it is heavily overgrown with dense scrub and small trees, making it impassable and unrecognizable from the ground as an airstrip. Its faint outline is still visible in satellite imagery, but it is effectively just bushland managed by the NSW NPWS for conservation.

Historical Significance

The airfield, known locally as the Spencer Airstrip or Popran Airstrip, was a private landing ground. It does not appear in official records from WWII, with historical imagery showing it was constructed sometime between the 1940s and the early 1960s. Its primary function was likely for recreational flying for local landowners and potentially for agricultural purposes, given the proximity to the Mangrove Mountain farming region. It served the local light aircraft community for several decades but held no major national or military significance.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. Its location within a protected national park makes any redevelopment for aviation purposes legally and environmentally unfeasible. The site will continue to regenerate as natural bushland.
