Approximately 2001. The airfield was progressively closed down in the late 1990s and early 2000s as the land was sold and prepared for development.
Urban encroachment and real estate development. As the suburbs of Geelong expanded, the land occupied by the airport became significantly more valuable for residential housing than for aviation purposes. The owners ultimately sold the land to developers, leading to the airport's permanent closure.
The site has been completely redeveloped into a dense residential housing estate. The area is now a suburb of Grovedale, with no physical trace of the original runways, taxiways, or hangars remaining. As a tribute to the site's history, the developers named the streets after aviation themes, such as Runway Avenue, Cessna Drive, Piper Avenue, Aviation Avenue, and Kittyhawk Crescent.
For several decades, Grovedale Airport was the primary general aviation and flight training hub for the Geelong region. It was established post-WWII and became a vital facility for private pilots and commercial training operations. The airport was home to several flying schools (such as the Geelong Flying School), charter services, and aircraft maintenance businesses. It handled a significant volume of light aircraft traffic, including popular training aircraft like Cessnas, Pipers, and de Havilland Chipmunks, playing a crucial role in the region's aviation community.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening. The land has been fully and permanently converted to residential use, with hundreds of homes, roads, and local infrastructure built on the former airfield. A return to aviation operations is impossible.
