Circa early 1990s. The airport's closure was a gradual process rather than a single event, with operations ceasing as the site was redeveloped throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Land use conflict and redevelopment. The airfield was uniquely located within the grounds of the Geelong Racecourse. The primary reason for its closure was the expansion and modernization of the racecourse facilities. As the racecourse grew and the surrounding suburban areas of Geelong expanded, operating an active airfield became impractical and unsafe, leading to its eventual phase-out in favor of its primary use for equestrian events.
The site is now exclusively the Geelong Racecourse. The former grass runways and aviation facilities have been completely removed and are now part of the turf race track, training tracks, stables, and spectator facilities. There are no visible remnants of its past use as an airfield.
Known as the Geelong Racecourse Airfield, it served as a key general aviation hub for the Geelong community from the post-WWII era (approximately the 1950s) until its closure. It was the home of the Geelong Aero Club for many years before the club relocated. The airfield primarily handled light aircraft, such as Cessnas and Pipers, for recreational flying, flight training, and private transport. It was a grassroots facility and did not handle scheduled commercial or passenger airline services.
None. There are absolutely no plans or prospects for reopening this airfield. The land is fully developed and utilized as a major horse racing venue located within a built-up urban area. The general aviation needs for the city are met by the current Geelong Airport (YGLG) in Grovedale, while commercial and international flights are handled by the nearby Avalon Airport (YMAV).
