Approximately 2017-2018. The helipad's closure was directly tied to the phased restructuring and eventual closure of the hospital's acute care and emergency departments.
The helipad was closed due to a strategic reorganization of regional healthcare services. The Kitzbühel District Hospital (Bezirkskrankenhaus Kitzbühel) was downsized and its emergency, trauma, and acute surgical services were consolidated at the larger, more modern hospital in the nearby town of St. Johann in Tirol (BKH St. Johann). This consolidation rendered the dedicated HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) helipad at the Kitzbühel location obsolete, as emergency patients are now flown directly to the fully-equipped facility in St. Johann.
The site of the former hospital has been repurposed into the 'Gesundheitszentrum Kitzbühel,' a health center that provides long-term care, nursing, and various therapy services. While the physical landing pad structure may still exist on the building's roof, it is decommissioned and is no longer a registered or operational aviation facility. All regional HEMS flights are now directed to the active rooftop helipad at the main hospital in St. Johann in Tirol (ICAO: LOIJ).
The helipad was a critical piece of emergency infrastructure for the world-famous Kitzbühel ski resort and the surrounding alpine region. Its primary function was to handle HEMS operations, facilitating the rapid transport of patients suffering from severe trauma, often from skiing, mountaineering, or other accidents. It was particularly vital during the busy winter season and major international sporting events like the Hahnenkamm ski races. The helipad provided direct access to the hospital's emergency and surgical departments, significantly reducing transport times for critically injured patients.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the helipad. The decision to centralize acute and emergency medical care in St. Johann is a long-term strategic plan for the region's healthcare network. Reopening a HEMS helipad at a facility that lacks an emergency department, trauma center, and surgical capabilities would be illogical and counterproductive.
