Late 2011. The last official day of flight operations was reported to be October 30, 2011.
The primary reason for the closure was economic and land-use change. The lease agreement for the airfield's land was not renewed by the landowner, the Stift Klosterneuburg (a prominent Austrian monastery and landowner). The landowner chose to lease the site for a more profitable venture: the construction of a large-scale solar power plant.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped. It is now the location of the 'Photovoltaikpark Leopoldsdorf/Glinzendorf', which at the time of its construction was Austria's largest solar farm. The project, developed by oekostrom AG, became operational in 2012. The runway, hangars, and all other aviation-related infrastructure have been removed and replaced by thousands of solar panels generating renewable energy.
Leopoldsdorf im Marchfelde Airfield was a private general aviation (GA) airfield significant to the local aviation community. From 1980 until its closure, it served as the home base for the flying club 'Flugsportverein (FSV) Deutsch-Wagram'. The airfield featured a grass runway (approximately 650 meters long) and was used for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) operations, including recreational flying, private pilot training, and ultralight activities. While it held no major national or military importance, it was a vital hub for private aviation enthusiasts in the Marchfeld region, located just east of Vienna.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The complete and permanent conversion of the land into a major solar energy park makes any return to aviation use practically and economically impossible. The former home flying club, FSV Deutsch-Wagram, successfully relocated its operations to the nearby Deutsch-Wagram Airfield (ICAO: LOAU).
