Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2017-2018. The airfield ceased operations to accommodate the construction of a large-scale solar park. The first phase of this new project was announced as complete in October 2018, indicating the airfield was permanently closed just prior to this period.

Reason for Closure

Land redevelopment for renewable energy. The primary reason for the closure was the decision to repurpose the land for the construction of the Strasshof Solar Park (Photovoltaikanlage Strasshof). The location was deemed ideal for one of Austria's largest photovoltaic power plants, an economic and land-use decision which made continued aviation operations impossible.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield is now completely occupied by the Strasshof Solar Park. The runways, taxiways, and surrounding grounds have been covered with thousands of solar panels. Operated by Wien Energie, this facility is one of the largest photovoltaic power plants in Austria, contributing significantly to the national renewable energy grid. The original hangars have been removed, and the land is fully dedicated to energy production.

Historical Significance

Strasshof Airfield was a locally significant hub for general aviation, with a strong focus on the ultralight (UL) aircraft community. It was not a major commercial or military airport. Its role was to serve recreational pilots, flying clubs, and flight schools in the region northeast of Vienna (Weinviertel). The airfield, identified by the national code AT-0014, was a popular base for private aircraft owners and provided essential facilities for training and leisure flying in the light aviation sector.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped into a major energy infrastructure project. The scale and permanence of the Strasshof Solar Park make it physically and economically infeasible to ever restore the site to its former use as an airfield.
