The airport ceased operations in the early 2010s, approximately around 2012-2013. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runways were still visible in 2012, but by 2014, construction of a new road grid for a housing development had begun on the site.
The primary reason for the closure was economic, driven by urban encroachment and real estate development. As the Monte Grande area, a suburb of Greater Buenos Aires, expanded, the land occupied by the airport became extremely valuable for residential use. The aerodrome was sold to developers to construct a private, gated community.
The site of the former airport has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now a gated residential community ('barrio cerrado' or 'country' in local terminology) with houses, paved streets, parks, and other residential infrastructure. There are no physical remnants of the runways, taxiways, or hangars visible today.
The Monte Grande Airport was the home of the 'Aeroclub Monte Grande' (Monte Grande Flying Club). It was a significant general aviation airfield for the southern zone of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Its operations were focused on:
- Flight training for private and sport pilots.
- Recreational flying for club members and private aircraft owners.
- Hangarage and basic maintenance for small, single-engine aircraft (like Cessna, Piper, etc.).
It served as a community hub for local aviation enthusiasts for decades but never handled commercial, cargo, or military operations.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently converted to a high-density residential zone, making any future aviation activity at this location physically and legally impossible.
