The airport did not close on a specific date but fell into disuse gradually. It was constructed in the early 1990s and became progressively derelict throughout the 2000s due to a lack of maintenance. By the early 2010s, it was considered completely inoperative and abandoned.
The primary reason for closure was economic neglect. The airport was built by the Entidad Binacional Yacyretá (EBY) as a replacement facility, but after being handed over to local authorities, there was insufficient funding for its upkeep. The low volume of general aviation traffic could not sustain the operational and maintenance costs of a paved runway, leading to its slow decay and eventual abandonment.
The site is completely abandoned and in a state of severe disrepair. Satellite imagery and local reports confirm the asphalt runway is cracked, crumbling, and being reclaimed by vegetation. Informal dirt tracks now cross the runway, and the area is reportedly used by locals for unauthorized activities like recreational driving and motorcycle racing. All aviation infrastructure is gone or unusable, and the site is permanently closed to air traffic.
This airport's main historical significance is tied to the construction of the massive Yacyretá Dam. The original airfield for the town (home to the Aeroclub Ituzaingó) was expropriated and ultimately flooded by the dam's reservoir. This airport (AR-0751) was built by the dam's binational authority, EBY, in the early 1990s to compensate the community. It was designed to support general aviation, medical flights, and tourism for the newly created attractions of the dam and the nearby Iberá Wetlands. Despite having a modern paved runway, it never attracted scheduled commercial flights and its operations were limited to the local flying club and private aircraft.
There are zero prospects for reopening this specific airport. Its condition is considered too deteriorated for cost-effective renovation. However, due to Ituzaingó's strategic location as a gateway to the Iberá National Park, the national and provincial governments are actively developing a project to build a completely new airport at a different location. Tenders for this new facility, designed to handle commercial tourism flights, were announced in 2022. This new project effectively renders the old AR-0751 site obsolete and ensures it will not be reopened.
