Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2006. The process of closure began around 2005, with final operations ceasing and the airport being officially closed in 2006.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for the closure was economic, driven by urban encroachment and real estate development. The land, owned by the prestigious Hindú Club, became immensely valuable as the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires expanded. The club decided that developing the land for a high-end, gated residential community was far more profitable than continuing to operate a general aviation airport.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped. It is now a large, private, gated residential community known as 'Barrio Cerrado Hindú Club' or 'Aviación'. The layout of the streets within the community clearly follows the path of the former main runway and taxiways, preserving a faint outline of its aviation past. There are no remaining aviation facilities on the site.

Historical Significance

Don Torcuato Airport was one of the most important and historic general aviation (GA) airfields in Argentina. Founded in the 1930s by Carlos M. de Alvear, it served as the premier hub for private and sport aviation in the northern zone of Greater Buenos Aires for decades. When active, it was a bustling center that housed numerous flight schools (escuelas de vuelo), air taxi services, aircraft maintenance workshops, and was the home base for a large number of privately owned aircraft. It was renowned for its vibrant community of pilots and aviation enthusiasts and played a crucial role in the development of civil aviation in the country.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been irreversibly and permanently converted to high-density residential use. Re-establishing an airport on this site is physically, legally, and economically impossible.

Runway closed? Posted by ptomblin on December 31, 2008

The only apparent runway in the satellite image has "X"s. I wonder if the whole airport is closed?
