The airport ceased operations in the late 1990s, approximately around 1997-1998. The process of relocation and redevelopment was initiated by a provincial law (Ley Provincial Nº 2378) passed in 1986, but the final transfer of land and the physical move of the Aeroclub took several years to complete.
The closure was a direct result of urban encroachment. The city of Posadas grew significantly around the airfield, enveloping it with residential neighborhoods. This proximity created increasing safety risks, noise pollution for residents, and limitations on both airport operations and further urban development. The provincial government expropriated the land to address these issues and repurpose the valuable real estate for public use.
The site has been completely transformed and no longer exists as an airfield. It was redeveloped into the 'Parque de la Ciudad de Posadas' (Posadas City Park), a major urban park and recreational green space for the city. The area is now home to walking trails, sports facilities, and cultural event spaces. The surrounding neighborhood is a dense residential area, aptly named 'Barrio Aeroclub' in homage to the site's history. No physical remnants of the runways or hangars remain.
Founded in 1930, the Aeroclub Posadas was the original aviation hub for the city and the entire Misiones province. For decades, it was the primary airfield, serving as the center for general aviation, flight training for new pilots, air taxi services, and recreational flying. Before the construction of the current main airport (Libertador General José de San Martín Airport - SARP/PSS), it was the crucial link for air mail and early passenger flights, playing a vital role in the region's transportation and development. It holds significant historical importance as the birthplace of aviation for countless local pilots.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airport at this location. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed into a public park and is surrounded by dense urban infrastructure. The aviation institution, Aeroclub Posadas, was not dissolved; it successfully relocated to a new facility near the main Posadas international airport (SARP/PSS), where it continues to operate today.
