Mid-to-late 1990s. While flight operations likely dwindled gradually, the definitive end of its function as an airport was formalized by the provincial law Ley XVI – Nº 50 (formerly Ley 3326) passed in 1996. This law authorized the transfer of the land from the Aero Club Montecarlo to the Municipality of Montecarlo for a new public purpose.
The closure was due to a combination of economic decline and a strategic change in land use. The Aero Club Montecarlo, the civil association that founded and operated the airfield, faced diminishing activity and financial unsustainability. Simultaneously, the municipal government saw a greater public benefit in converting the strategically located land into a park and a permanent venue for a major local festival.
The site has been completely repurposed into the 'Parque Juan Vortisch', a major public park and tourist attraction for the city. The park is the permanent home of the 'Fiesta Nacional de la Orquídea y Provincial de la Flor' (National Orchid and Provincial Flower Festival). A significant portion of the former runway has been converted into a popular go-kart track ('Kartódromo de Montecarlo'). The remaining paved surfaces are used as internal park roads and parking lots, while the surrounding area features landscaped gardens, event pavilions, and a well-known vegetable labyrinth.
Inaugurated on October 15, 1961, the Montecarlo Aerodrome was a crucial hub for general aviation in the Alto Paraná region of the Misiones province. Operated by the Aero Club Montecarlo, it was vital for connecting the community, handling private flights, air taxi services, pilot training, agricultural aviation, and emergency medical evacuations in an era of less developed road infrastructure. It was a center for social life, hosting well-attended airshows, but it never handled large-scale scheduled commercial airline flights.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been successfully and permanently redeveloped into a vital cultural and recreational asset for Montecarlo. The existence of the park, festival grounds, and go-kart track makes a reversion to aviation use practically impossible. Furthermore, the aviation needs of the region are served by the larger Eldorado Airport (IATA: EDO, ICAO: SATD), located approximately 50 km to the north.
