Approximately 2007-2008. Satellite imagery shows a clear, active runway in 2006, but by 2009, the area was undergoing significant construction for a new residential development, with the runway completely removed.
Urban encroachment and real estate development. The airport was located in an area of the northern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires that experienced a massive real estate boom in the 2000s. The land became far more valuable for residential development than for general aviation, leading to its sale and redevelopment.
The site of the former airport has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now occupied by the 'Barrio San Isidro Labrador,' an upscale, private gated community. This neighborhood is part of the larger 'Complejo Villanueva' real estate project, which is adjacent to the well-known Nordelta complex. The area is now characterized by modern homes, manicured lawns, and a network of artificial lakes and canals. No physical trace of the former runway, hangars, or any airport infrastructure remains.
Benavidez Airport, also known as 'AerĂłdromo Privado de Benavidez', was a key general aviation facility for the northern zone of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. It primarily served private pilots, flight training schools, and air taxi services. The airport featured a single grass runway (Runway 02/20), approximately 1000 meters (3,280 feet) long, and several hangars for light aircraft. It was a popular hub for recreational flying and pilot training, contributing significantly to the local aviation community before the large-scale urbanization of the region.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently converted to a high-value, densely populated residential area. Re-establishing an airport at this location is logistically, economically, and legally impossible.
