Approximately late 1998. The airport's operations ceased with the inauguration of the new, modern Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña Airport (IATA: SPQ, ICAO: SARS) on August 11, 1998, which was built to replace this older facility.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a larger, more modern facility. The original airfield, operated by the local Aero Club, had a grass or dirt runway and limited infrastructure. It was inadequate for handling the larger commercial aircraft required for scheduled passenger services. The new airport (SARS) was constructed with a paved runway, a proper terminal, and modern navigation aids to improve regional connectivity and accommodate airlines like Aerolíneas Argentinas.
The site is no longer an airport and has been completely absorbed by the urban expansion of Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña. The area is now a residential neighborhood known as 'Barrio Aeroclub'. The faint outline of the former north-south runway is still visible on satellite imagery as a long, open green space, but it is crossed by city streets. The land has been repurposed for housing, public parks, and other urban uses. The original hangars and club buildings may still exist but are no longer used for aviation.
This was the original airfield for Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña and served as the home base for the 'Aeroclub Sáenz Peña' since its founding in the mid-20th century. For over 50 years, it was the primary center for aviation in the central Chaco province. Operations were focused on general aviation, including flight training, private flights, agricultural aviation (crop dusting), and essential services like air ambulance and regional air taxi flights. It was a vital piece of infrastructure for the region's development before it was superseded by the new airport.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been irrevocably redeveloped for urban use, and the city is now served by the fully operational Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña Airport (SARS) located just 5 kilometers to the northeast. Re-establishing an airport at this location is logistically impossible and economically redundant.
