🇦🇶 Boulder Clay Runway Airport

Boulder Clay Runway (ICAO: AQBC) is a private gravel airstrip located approximately 6 kilometers south of Italy's Mario Zucchelli Station in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, at coordinates 74°44′22″S 164°02′07″E.

Type of facility and operations: The runway is designed to support logistical airfreight operations for the Italian National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA) and other Antarctic programs in the Ross Sea region, including those of New Zealand, South Korea, and the US Antarctic Program. It is 2,200 meters (7,200 ft) long and 60 meters wide, capable of accommodating aircraft such as the C-130J, C-17 Globemaster, Airbus A319-115LR, and Boeing 757. The facility will include a taxiway, an apron for two C-130 Hercules, fire services, a fuel deposit, a terminal, a personnel shed, an operation room, and a power unit.

Notable features or history: Construction of the Boulder Clay Runway began in the 2016–17 Antarctic season. It is the first runway in Antarctica built on a moraine, utilizing debris deposits over a glacier,. The runway's foundation uses coarse stone material, with upper layers of decreasing grain size, incorporating an Air Convection Embankment (ACE) to protect the underlying moraine/glacier system from summer overheating,.
