Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 24, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 1982 (as the primary international airport)

Reason for Closure

The airport, then known as Abu Dhabi International Airport, was replaced by the new, much larger Abu Dhabi International Airport (ICAO: OMAA, IATA: AUH), which opened in 1982. The original airfield, located on Abu Dhabi island, had become too small to handle the increasing air traffic volume and the larger wide-body aircraft (like the Boeing 747) that were becoming standard for international travel. Its closure as the main commercial hub was a strategic decision based on capacity constraints and the need for a modern facility located further from the growing city center.

Current Status

The site is not abandoned; it is a fully operational and thriving airport. In 2008, the facility was transformed and rebranded as Al Bateen Executive Airport (ICAO: OMAD, IATA: AZI). It is now the Middle East's first dedicated private aviation airport. It caters exclusively to business jets, VVIP flights, and charter aircraft. The airport is managed by Abu Dhabi Airports and features luxurious terminals and FBO (Fixed-Base Operator) services. While its primary function is business aviation, it still maintains a military presence.

Historical Significance

This airfield holds significant historical importance as it was the first main airport in Abu Dhabi. Originally established as a Royal Air Force (RAF) base, it was developed into Abu Dhabi's primary international gateway in the 1960s. It played a pivotal role during the emirate's rapid economic expansion following the discovery of oil, connecting Abu Dhabi to the rest of the world. When active as the main airport, it handled all of the emirate's scheduled passenger and cargo traffic, serving major international carriers of the era like Gulf Air and British Airways. After its role as the primary international airport ended in 1982, it was converted into a dedicated military installation known as Bateen Air Base, serving the UAE Air Force.

Reopening Prospects

The airport is not closed and does not require reopening. It was successfully repurposed and is currently operating as Al Bateen Executive Airport. There are no plans to revert it to a commercial international airport, as that role is fulfilled by the larger Abu Dhabi International Airport (OMAA/AUH) and the new Zayed International Airport terminal. Its future is firmly established as a premier hub for private and business aviation in the region.
