IndiGo (ICAO: IGO) is a prominent Indian low-cost carrier known for its extensive network and operational efficiency.
IndiGo was established in 2005 as a private company by Rahul Bhatia of InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal. The airline commenced its operations on August 4, 2006, with its inaugural flight from New Delhi to Imphal via Guwahati. Since its founding, IndiGo has rapidly grown to become the largest airline in India by passenger market share and fleet size, also ranking as the second-largest Asian airline and one of the largest globally in terms of passengers carried.
The airline's headquarters are located in Gurugram, India. Its primary hub is at Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi). IndiGo also maintains significant operational bases at other major Indian airports, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai), Chennai International Airport (Chennai), Cochin International Airport (Kochi), Kempegowda International Airport (Bengaluru), Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (Kolkata), and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad).
As of August 2025, IndiGo operates a fleet of approximately 434 aircraft, primarily consisting of Airbus models. The passenger fleet includes Airbus A320-200, A320neo, A321neo, and ATR 72-600 aircraft. For cargo operations, it utilizes Airbus A321-200/P2F freighters. IndiGo has also expanded its long-haul capabilities by wet-leasing Boeing 777s from Turkish Airlines and Boeing 787-9s from Norse Atlantic. The airline has placed substantial orders for more Airbus A320neo family aircraft and Airbus A350-900s, with deliveries for the latter expected from 2027. IndiGo's route network is extensive, serving over 2,700 daily flights to 137-138 destinations as of November 2025, comprising 94 domestic and 43-44 international routes across Asia, Africa, and Europe. The airline focuses heavily on both domestic and international connectivity, including regional routes under India's UDAN scheme. IndiGo is not a member of any major global airline alliance (like Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or Oneworld). However, it has established codeshare partnerships with several international carriers, including American Airlines, Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Qantas Airways, Malaysia Airlines, British Airways, and Japan Airlines. While it primarily offers Economy class seating, IndiGo provides a buy-on-board meal program. The airline has introduced premium services such as 6E Upgrade and Super 6E Fare, offering benefits like pre-assigned seats, flexible cancellations, complimentary snacks, priority check-in, and extra baggage allowance. In November 2024, IndiGo also launched a new business class product called IndiGoStretch on select domestic and international routes, with further expansion plans. The airline typically does not offer in-flight entertainment systems but provides an in-flight magazine, "Hello 6E."
Traveler reviews for IndiGo often highlight both its strengths as a low-cost carrier and areas where it falls short compared to full-service airlines.
What Travelers Love:
Common Complaints:
Overall sentiment tends to be positive for its core low-cost, on-time service model, especially for short domestic trips. However, for longer international journeys, the lack of amenities and comfort typically associated with full-service carriers often leads to traveler dissatisfaction, particularly when ticket prices are not significantly lower than competitors.
IndiGo generally maintains a strong safety record, recognized for having no fatalities or hull losses since it began operations in 2006. This track record is often attributed to its robust maintenance practices and a relatively young fleet.
In terms of regulatory oversight, there have been some recent concerns. In August 2025, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo concerning alleged lapses in simulator training for approximately 1,700 pilots. This led to a downgrade of IndiGo's safety rating to 5 out of 7 by AirlineRatings. Additionally, in the 13 months leading up to January 2025, IndiGo accounted for the highest number of technical malfunctions reported by private airlines, with 118 instances. A notable incident in May 2025 involved an IndiGo flight encountering severe turbulence due to a hailstorm, causing visible damage to the aircraft, though it landed safely with no reported injuries.
Despite these recent challenges, IndiGo has been recognized for its commitment to maintaining a modern fleet. It was awarded "World's Youngest Aircraft Fleet 2025" by ch-aviation for the third consecutive year (in the category of airlines operating 100+ aircraft), with an average fleet age of 4.38 years as of February 2025. While its newer A320neo fleet is praised for fuel efficiency and reliability, the airline is reportedly facing operational difficulties and higher maintenance costs with its older A320ceo fleet, which it is in the process of phasing out.
Overall, IndiGo's safety assessment reflects a history of strong operational safety, bolstered by a young and well-maintained fleet. However, recent regulatory actions and a higher incidence of reported technical snags indicate areas where the airline needs to reinforce its safety protocols and training to maintain its long-standing reputation. IndiGo has received several recognitions related to safety and workplace environment, including being ranked #1 as the safest airline in India by the Safe Travel Barometer in 2020. It was also recognized as one of the Top 25 Safest Workplaces in India by the KelpHR PoSH Awards in 2021 and 2023.
