Approximately between 1998 and 2002. The airport was depicted as active on the 1998 New Orleans Sectional Chart. However, aerial photography from 2002-2004 shows the runway markings gone and a road constructed across the former runway area, indicating it had ceased operations within that timeframe.
While no single official reason is documented, the closure was almost certainly due to economic factors and the subsequent sale of the land for more profitable industrial development. The redevelopment of the site for heavy industry confirms the land was repurposed.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by a large industrial facility related to the petrochemical and natural gas storage industry in the region, specifically near the Bayou Corne salt dome. All traces of the runway, hangars, and other airport infrastructure have been entirely removed.
Cane-Air Airport was a private airfield established sometime before 1978. As its name implies, its primary function was to support the local sugarcane industry through agricultural aviation. It was operated by Cane-Air Inc. and served as a base for crop-dusting aircraft. The airport featured a single 3,000-foot unpaved turf runway (designated 17/35) and was a key piece of infrastructure for the agricultural economy in Assumption Parish.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Cane-Air Airport. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for heavy industrial use, making a return to aviation activities impossible.
