The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern facility. The original airport had a relatively short, unpaved turf runway which limited the size of aircraft that could use it and restricted operations during poor weather. To support the region's economic growth and accommodate modern business jets, the city constructed the new Sioux Center Municipal Airport (ICAO: KSOY) at a different location with a 5,000-foot paved runway. Operations were transferred to the new airport upon its completion.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and absorbed into the Sioux Center Industrial Park. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows large industrial and commercial buildings now occupy the land where the runways and hangars once stood. There are no visible remnants of the airport's infrastructure.
The original Sioux Center Municipal Airport was a classic general aviation airfield that served the community for many decades. It featured two turf runways in an 'X' configuration, with the longest being approximately 2,640 feet. The airport was a hub for local private pilots, agricultural aviation (crop dusting), and small business travel. It played a crucial role in connecting the rural community by air but was eventually deemed inadequate for the growing economic ambitions of the city, which necessitated an airport with all-weather capabilities and the capacity for larger aircraft.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. Its function was officially and permanently replaced by the new Sioux Center Municipal Airport (KSOY). The original land has been fully repurposed for industrial use, making a return to aviation operations physically impossible and logistically unnecessary.
