Approximately 1993. The airport was confirmed to be closed on the 1993 Sectional Aeronautical Chart, following the construction and opening of its replacement.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by the new, modern Orange City Municipal Airport (FAA: KORC), located southwest of the city. The original airport had unpaved turf runways and limited facilities. The community invested in a new airport with a paved runway and modern amenities to better accommodate general aviation traffic and support local economic development, rendering the old field obsolete.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and repurposed. It is now an industrial park. The land is occupied by large commercial and manufacturing facilities, including a significant portion of the Diamond Vogel paint manufacturing plant. All physical traces of the runways, hangars, and other airport infrastructure have been removed.
The original Orange City Municipal Airport was a typical small general aviation airfield that served the community for several decades. It featured two turf runways arranged in an 'X' pattern, with the longest runway being approximately 2,600 feet. Operations were limited to small, single-engine aircraft suitable for grass strips. It primarily handled private flying, potential agricultural aviation (crop dusting), and light business travel, serving as the city's main air access point before the new airport was built.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been irreversibly developed for industrial use, and the city is well-served by the newer Orange City Municipal Airport (KORC), which meets all current aviation needs for the community.
