Approximately 1998. The airport was officially closed following the construction and activation of its replacement, the new Wynne Municipal Airport (FAA: M65), which opened in August 1998.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, more modern facility. The original airport was likely deemed inadequate for future needs due to factors such as a relatively short runway, lack of space for expansion, and aging infrastructure. The city and county opted to build a new airport at a different location to better serve the region's general and agricultural aviation requirements.
The airport is permanently closed and has been partially redeveloped for industrial and agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the site shows that the southern half of the former runway is now occupied by a large agricultural facility, identified as an Armor Seed plant, with large buildings and silos built directly on the old pavement. The northern portion of the runway is still visible but is cracked, overgrown, and in a severe state of decay. The site is not used for any aviation activities.
The original Wynne Municipal Airport was a public-use, general aviation airport that served the city of Wynne and Cross County, Arkansas, for several decades, likely established between 1945 and 1953. It was a vital asset for the local agricultural economy, supporting crop-dusting operations. It also handled private and business aviation for the community. Aeronautical charts from the 1980s show it had a single paved asphalt runway (18/36) with a length of 3,500 feet. It served as the primary aviation hub for the area before its replacement.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening this airport. Its function has been completely and permanently superseded by the new Wynne Municipal Airport (M65). The significant and irreversible redevelopment of the land with large, permanent industrial structures makes any future return to aviation use infeasible.
