Circa 2007. The airport was still listed as active in the 2006 FAA Airport/Facility Directory but was officially marked as closed on the Kansas City Sectional Chart published in 2007.
Economic development. The City of St. Clair made a strategic decision to close the airport to repurpose the valuable land for an industrial park. The goal was to attract new businesses, generate tax revenue, and create local jobs, which was deemed a more valuable use of the property than a general aviation airport.
The airport site has been completely and permanently redeveloped into the St. Clair Industrial Park. Large industrial buildings, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities have been constructed directly over the former runway, taxiways, and apron areas. While faint outlines of the old runway are still visible in satellite imagery, the land is now fully occupied by commercial infrastructure, including buildings for companies like American Precision Die Casting, and is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
St. Clair Regional Airport, formerly known by its FAA identifier K39, was a city-owned, public-use general aviation airport that served the community for several decades after its establishment in the 1960s. It featured a single asphalt runway, designated 18/36, with a length of approximately 3,200 feet. The airport was a hub for local private pilots, supporting recreational flying, flight training, and business-related travel. Operations included a fixed-base operator (FBO) that provided essential services like 100LL Avgas fuel, aircraft maintenance, and hangar storage.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been irreversibly redeveloped with significant investment in industrial infrastructure. Reverting the site to an airport would be economically and logistically impossible.
