The airport was closed sometime between 1965 and 1971. It was still depicted on the 1965 Dallas Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1971 version.
The primary reason for its closure was its replacement by the new, more modern Nocona Municipal Airport (FAA: F48), which was constructed a few miles to the east. The original airport's facilities and single runway became obsolete with the opening of the new airport.
The site has been extensively redeveloped for industrial purposes. A large oil and gas services facility, operated by Patterson-UTI, has been built directly over the southern half of the former runway. The remaining northern portion of the runway is still visible on satellite imagery but is in a state of severe decay, with grass growing through cracks in the pavement. This remaining section appears to be used for parking and storage of industrial vehicles and equipment.
This was the original airport for the city of Nocona, Texas, active from at least the late 1940s. It served as a general aviation hub for the community, supporting private pilots, business travel (notably for local industries like the Nocona Boot Company), and possibly agricultural aviation. Initially, it had a 2,600-foot unpaved runway, which was later paved and extended to 3,000 feet. It was the main air portal for the town for approximately two decades before being superseded. The identifier 'US-11520' is a non-standard, proprietary database ID, not an official ICAO or FAA code from its time of operation.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been permanently repurposed with significant industrial infrastructure built on the site. The existence of the active and superior Nocona Municipal Airport (F48) nearby makes the reopening of this former airfield both unnecessary and economically infeasible.
