The airport officially ceased flight operations on December 31, 2018. The final closure and decommissioning of the property occurred in early 2019.
The closure was for economic reasons, driven by urban sprawl. The Weiser family, who had owned and operated the airport for over 50 years, sold the valuable 100-acre property to a real estate developer, Trammell Crow Residential. The land's value for residential development in the rapidly growing Cypress area of Houston far exceeded its profitability as a small general aviation airport.
The airport has been completely demolished. The site was redeveloped into a large, high-density residential apartment complex called 'Alexan Cypress Creek'. All runways, taxiways, hangars, and other airport infrastructure have been removed and replaced with apartment buildings, streets, and parking lots.
Opened in 1963, Weiser Air Park (which had the FAA identifier KEYQ) was a cherished, privately-owned, public-use airport. It was a cornerstone of the Houston general aviation community for decades. The airport was renowned for its friendly, 'old-school' atmosphere and served as a vital center for flight training, aircraft maintenance (FBO services), and hangar space for local pilots. It was a classic example of a family-run airfield that provided an accessible entry point into aviation for countless students and a beloved home base for recreational flyers. Its loss was deeply felt by the local aviation community.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The airport is permanently closed, and the land has been irrevocably redeveloped for residential use, making any return to aviation operations at this location impossible.
