Approximately late 2010. The airport was officially closed following the construction and dedication of its replacement, the Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport (KPYP), which opened in October 2010.
Replacement and economic redevelopment. The airport's facilities were limited, featuring a relatively short 3,000-foot runway that could not accommodate larger aircraft or support instrument approaches. It was strategically closed to be replaced by the new, modern Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport (KPYP), which features a 5,500-foot runway and superior facilities. The closure allowed the valuable land of the old airport, located near the city center, to be repurposed for economic development.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into the Cherokee County Industrial Park. Large industrial buildings and commercial facilities have been constructed on the former airport grounds, including on areas that were once the apron and taxiways. The faint outline of the north-south runway is still partially visible in satellite imagery, but it has been repurposed as an access road and storage area for the businesses within the industrial park. All aviation infrastructure has been removed.
Centre Municipal Airport, which used the FAA identifier C22, was a public-use general aviation airport established around 1966. For over four decades, it served as the primary air access point for the city of Centre and the surrounding Cherokee County. Its operations were focused on general aviation, including private and business travel in small aircraft, agricultural aviation (crop dusting), and flight training. It featured a single asphalt runway (18/36) and basic support facilities. The airport was a key piece of local infrastructure but did not handle any scheduled commercial passenger services.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the Centre Municipal Airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to industrial use. The community's aviation needs are now fully served by the nearby Centre-Piedmont-Cherokee County Regional Airport (KPYP), which was built specifically to replace and upgrade the capabilities of the old airport.
