The airport was closed sometime between 1998 and 2002. It was depicted as an active airfield on the 1998 aeronautical chart but was marked as 'Closed' on the 2002 chart.
The closure was primarily for economic reasons, specifically for land redevelopment. The airport was privately owned, and the land was sold for industrial use. This is evidenced by the subsequent construction of a large manufacturing facility on the former airport property.
The site of the former airport has been extensively redeveloped. The southern portion of the property, including part of the former runway, is now occupied by a large industrial plant operated by the International Automotive Components (IAC) Group. While the faint outline of the northern part of the runway is still visible in satellite imagery, it is overgrown and the land is effectively an industrial park. The site is no longer used for any aviation-related activities.
Clinton Airport (former FAA identifier: 1I7) was a small, privately-owned, public-use general aviation airport that served the community of Clinton, Indiana, for over 50 years. It was established sometime before 1946. The airport featured a single north/south runway (18/36), which was initially turf and later paved with asphalt, measuring approximately 2,600 feet. Operations were typical for a small local airfield, consisting of private recreational flying, potential flight training, and other general aviation activities. It had a few hangars and a small office but never hosted scheduled commercial or significant military operations.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Clinton Airport. The construction of a major industrial facility directly on the former airport grounds makes a return to aviation operations at this location physically impossible. The land has been permanently repurposed.
