The exact date is unknown, but the airport closed sometime between 1977 and 1993. It was last depicted as an active private airfield on the 1977 St. Louis Sectional Aeronautical Chart and was no longer shown on the 1993 edition of the same chart.
While not officially documented, the closure was almost certainly for personal or economic reasons. Newton Airport was a small, private field named after its owner, C. W. Newton. The closure of such airfields is typically due to the owner's retirement, death, sale of the property, or the rising costs and liability of maintaining a private airstrip. There is no indication it was closed due to a major accident, environmental issues, or military conversion.
The site of the former airport is now private property and has been fully converted back to agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (39.504799, -90.505402) clearly shows the faint, ghostly outline of the former north/south runway within a cultivated farm field. No buildings, hangars, or other airport infrastructure remain. The land is actively farmed and the airstrip is completely gone and unusable.
Newton Airport (also known as Newton Field) was a private-use general aviation airfield with local significance. It was established sometime before 1971. The 1971 Flight Guide listed it as having a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway. Its primary function was to serve the personal aviation needs of its owner and potentially other local pilots with light aircraft. It did not handle commercial, cargo, or military operations and was a typical example of the numerous private farm strips that were common in rural America during that era.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Newton Airport. The land has been used for agriculture for decades, and the cost to purchase the land, cease farming operations, and reconstruct the airport to modern standards would be prohibitive. The airport is considered permanently closed.
