The airport was closed sometime between 1981 and 1993. It was last depicted on the 1981 St. Louis Sectional Aeronautical Chart and was no longer shown on the 1993 edition. Aerial photography from 1998 shows the runway as extant but unused, and by 2005, a farm building had been constructed over the southern end of the former runway.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a private airfield owned by an individual (C.T. Denby), the closure was most likely due to personal reasons, such as the owner's retirement from flying, the sale of the property, or the owner's passing. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed for military conversion, a specific accident, or broader economic reasons.
The site of the former Denby Airport is now private agricultural land. The faint outline of the former north-south runway can still be discerned in satellite imagery through variations in vegetation and soil. The land is actively farmed, and several farm buildings now occupy the southern portion of the site, including one directly on the former runway's path.
Denby Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. Its earliest known appearance on aviation charts was in 1960. It consisted of a single turf runway, designated 18/36, with a length of 2,200 feet. The airport was owned and operated by Mr. C.T. Denby and primarily served as a personal airstrip for the owner and possibly other local private pilots. It did not handle commercial or military operations and its significance was confined to the local general aviation community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Denby Airport. The land is privately owned, actively used for agriculture, and obstructed by permanent structures. The aviation needs of the Carlinville area are met by the nearby Carlinville Municipal Airport (KVIR), making the reopening of this former private strip extremely unlikely.
