The airport was permanently closed sometime between 2002 and 2008. Aeronautical charts from 2002 list it as an active airport, but by 2008, aviation databases and subsequent charts marked it as 'Closed Permanently'. A precise public record of the exact closure date is unavailable.
The closure was primarily for economic reasons. The City of Ligonier, which owned the airport, reportedly could no longer justify or afford the operational costs, maintenance, and necessary upgrades for the facility. This is a common reason for the closure of small municipal airports that have low traffic volumes and limited revenue streams.
The airport site has been decommissioned and the land has reverted to private ownership, primarily for agricultural use. As of the latest satellite imagery, the faint outline of the former east-west grass runway is still visible within a larger farm field. A building that was likely a hangar still stands on the north side of the former airfield, and it is probably used for farm equipment storage or other private purposes.
Established around 1968, Ligonier Airport (which used the FAA identifier 3LG) served as a local public-use general aviation airfield. It featured a single turf runway, designated 9/27, with a length of approximately 2,750 feet. The airport's operations were typical for a small-town facility, catering to private pilots for recreational flying, personal transportation, and potentially some agricultural aviation (crop dusting). It was a modest but important asset for the local aviation community, supporting light aircraft operations. It never hosted scheduled commercial passenger service or military operations.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Ligonier Airport. The land is now privately owned and integrated into agricultural operations. The significant financial investment required to reacquire the land, restore facilities, and bring an airport up to modern FAA standards makes a reopening highly improbable. The general aviation needs of the area are served by other nearby airports, such as Goshen Municipal Airport (KGSH) and Kendallville Municipal Airport (C62).
