Approximately between 1981 and 1991. The airport was last depicted on the 1981 Chicago Sectional Chart and was no longer listed by the time the November 1991 chart was published. A 1998 aerial photograph shows the site had been fully redeveloped.
Economic redevelopment. The land, situated at the prime interchange of Interstate 65 and Indiana State Road 10, was redeveloped into a large commercial truck stop, the Flying J Travel Center #726. The value of the land for commercial use far exceeded its value as a small, private airfield.
The site is currently the location of a large and active Flying J Travel Center. The entire area of the former runway and airfield has been completely built over with the travel center's main building, fuel pumps, and extensive parking lots for trucks and cars. There are no remaining physical traces of the airport.
The airport was a small, private airfield originally known as the 'Flying 'J' Ranch Airport'. It became operational around 1970 and served private aviation needs, likely for the ranch owner's personal and business use. It featured a single north/south unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. Its operations were limited to small, single-engine aircraft capable of using a short grass strip. While the original 'Flying J' name was for a ranch, its history is notable because the site was coincidentally redeveloped into a 'Flying J' brand truck stop, which now occupies the former airfield.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The site has been permanently and completely redeveloped for a high-traffic commercial purpose. Re-establishing an airport at this location is infeasible due to the existing infrastructure and land use.
