Approximately between 1998 and 2005. The airport was last depicted on the 1994 Detroit Sectional Chart. Satellite imagery from 1998 clearly shows an active grass runway, but by 2005, the entire area had been plowed and converted to cultivated farmland.
The specific reason is not officially documented, which is common for small, private airfields. However, the conversion of the land to agricultural use strongly suggests economic factors. Likely reasons include the owner's retirement or passing, the sale of the property, or the decision that the land was more valuable for farming than for aviation, combined with the rising costs of insurance and maintenance.
The site is now actively used for agriculture. The former turf runway no longer exists and is part of a larger, cultivated farm field. A single building, likely the original hangar, still stands at the north end of the former runway area, but all other signs of aviation activity have been erased.
Nuckols Airport was a private general aviation airfield, likely named for its owner/manager, Carl Nuckols. It was operational from at least the early 1960s. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway, designated 18/36, with a length of approximately 2,100 feet. It served local private pilots and their light, single-engine aircraft. It was never a commercial or military facility and did not handle scheduled flights or heavy aircraft.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Nuckols Airport. The land has been fully integrated into a farm and is privately owned. Re-establishing an airport on the site would require significant investment to purchase and redevelop the land, making it highly improbable.
