Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 1998 and 2002. The airport was still depicted on aeronautical charts and visible in aerial photos in 1998, but it was no longer shown on the 2003 Sectional Chart, and construction on the site was visible in 2002.

Reason for Closure

The airport was closed due to the sale and redevelopment of the land. The site was acquired by the state of Indiana for the construction of a large correctional and industrial complex.

Current Status

The site of the former airport is now completely occupied by the Pendleton Correctional Industrial Facility (CIF). This is a large, state-operated complex where offenders are employed in various industries, producing goods such as license plates, furniture, and other products for the state. All traces of the runway, hangars, and other airport infrastructure have been removed.

Historical Significance

Stephenson Airport (formerly FAA identifier: 5I2) was a public-use general aviation airport that served the community of Pendleton and the surrounding area. Established sometime between 1962 and 1970, it was initially a private field owned by Robert Stephenson before becoming public. It featured a single turf runway (18/36) approximately 2,600 feet long. The airport provided a base for local private pilots and offered basic services such as fuel and minor aircraft repairs. It was a typical small-town airfield supporting recreational flying and personal air travel for several decades.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and completely redeveloped for use as a state correctional industrial facility, making a return to aviation use impossible.
