Approximately between 1998 and 2005. Aeronautical charts and 1998 aerial photos show the airport as operational, with a clearly defined turf runway. However, by 2005, satellite imagery shows the land had been fully converted to cultivated farmland, with no visible trace of the runway.
Economic / Change in Land Use. The airport was a private airstrip located on active farmland. The closure was a deliberate decision to reclaim the land for agricultural purposes. This is a common reason for the closure of small, private airfields, as the land becomes more valuable for farming or the owner ceases aviation activities.
The site has been completely returned to agricultural use. All airport infrastructure, including any hangars and the runway itself, has been removed. Current satellite imagery shows the area as indistinguishable from the surrounding cultivated farm fields.
Entwistle Airport was a private general aviation airstrip established sometime between 1963 and 1968. It was named for its likely owner, local farmer and pilot Robert Entwistle. The airport consisted of a single north-south unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. It served as a base for personal, recreational flying and was depicted on Chicago Sectional Charts for several decades. It never handled commercial or significant military operations, representing a typical mid-20th century private American farm strip.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been fully and permanently converted back to farmland, and re-establishing an airport would require significant investment and construction on what is now productive agricultural land.
