Approximately 2003-2005. The airstrip was still visible in aerial imagery from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The estate was sold to a developer in 2003, and by the mid-2000s, imagery shows the land being redeveloped and the runway disappearing.
Real estate redevelopment. The airport was a private airstrip located on the 68-acre 'Mill Rose Farm' estate. The entire property was sold to a developer who then subdivided the land for the construction of a luxury single-family home community. The closure was a direct result of the land being repurposed for high-value residential use.
The site of the former airport is now completely redeveloped. The land that once comprised the Mill Rose Farm estate, including the runway, has been subdivided and is now a neighborhood of large, multi-million dollar homes. There are no remaining traces of the airstrip; the area is now occupied by private residences, manicured lawns, and wooded areas.
Mill Rose Farm RLA was a private, turf runway serving the owners of the historic Mill Rose Farm estate in the affluent village of Barrington Hills. For several decades leading up to its closure, the estate and its airstrip were owned by Paul Schrage, the influential former chief marketing officer for McDonald's Corporation. The airstrip, approximately 2,000-2,500 feet long, handled private general aviation aircraft for the personal use of the estate's residents. Its significance lies in being a prime example of a private residential airfield, a luxury amenity for wealthy landowners that has become increasingly rare due to suburban expansion and rising land values.
None. The land has been permanently converted to a high-density, high-value residential area. The presence of multiple private homes directly on the former runway's footprint makes any prospect of reopening the airport impossible from a logistical, legal, and practical standpoint.
