The airport was closed sometime between 1994 and 1998. It was last depicted on the 1994 Chicago Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer shown on the 1998 World Aeronautical Chart. Aerial photography from 1998 shows the runway was still clear, but by 2006 the land was being actively farmed, confirming its closure within that timeframe.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented, which is common for small, private airfields. However, the most likely reason is economic or a personal decision by the owner. Many private grass strips of this era were closed when the owner could no longer afford the upkeep, passed away, or decided to sell the land. The conversion of the property back to its primary regional use, agriculture, strongly suggests the closure was due to the airfield no longer being financially viable or necessary for its owner, rather than a specific incident, accident, or government action.
The site of the former Crawford Field has been fully converted back to agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows large, cultivated farm fields. While no airport infrastructure remains, the faint outline of the former north-south runway can still be discerned as a subtle line or change in vegetation within the fields, a common remnant of abandoned rural airstrips. The land is privately owned and used for farming.
Crawford Field was a small, private general aviation airfield with local significance. It was not a major commercial or military facility. Established sometime between 1963 and 1968, it served the local aviation community for approximately 30 years. Operations consisted of light, single-engine aircraft for recreational and personal use. The 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory listed it as a private field with a single unpaved (turf) north/south runway (18/36) measuring 2,600 feet in length. As a private field, it required prior permission for use and did not have any scheduled services or extensive infrastructure like hangars or a terminal.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Crawford Field. The land has been actively farmed for over two decades, and all airport infrastructure has been removed. Re-establishing an airport at this location would require purchasing valuable farmland, significant new construction, and a complex regulatory and permitting process. It is considered highly unlikely that an airport will ever operate at this site again.
