Approximately 1965-1966. The airport was last depicted on the 1965 Spokane Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 1966 edition, indicating it closed within that one-year period.
The primary reason for closure was redundancy. Murray Airport was the original airfield for Sandpoint but was replaced by the larger, more modern Sandpoint Municipal Airport (now Dave Wall Field, KSZT), which was constructed between 1953 and 1956. After the new airport became fully operational, the original Murray Airport likely operated as a private field for several more years before it was permanently closed and the land was sold for redevelopment.
The site of the former Murray Airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. A street named 'Murray Drive' runs directly along the centerline of the former runway. There are no remaining traces of the airport; the land is now occupied by single-family homes and residential infrastructure.
Murray Airport was the first airport to serve the Sandpoint, Idaho community. It was a general aviation airfield that appeared on aeronautical charts as early as 1949, listed as a commercial or municipal airport. It featured a single unpaved runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. The airport handled the area's private and light commercial air traffic in the post-World War II era until it was superseded by the current airport.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and fully converted to high-density residential use, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
