Approximately April 1, 2022. The heliport ceased all operations concurrently with the permanent closure of the Anamosa Community Hospital, which it served.
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the Anamosa Community Hospital shutting down. The hospital's parent company, MercyOne, cited economic reasons for the closure, including persistent financial challenges and declining patient volumes, which made the facility unsustainable.
The heliport is permanently closed and non-operational. While the physical concrete pad and markings may still exist on the ground next to the former hospital building, it is no longer a registered or active aviation facility. In August 2023, Jones County purchased the former hospital property. The building is being repurposed to house county government offices, including the Jones County Public Health department.
The Anamosa Community Hospital Heliport was a vital piece of infrastructure for the hospital and the surrounding rural communities in Jones County. Its sole purpose was to support emergency medical services. Operations primarily consisted of medical evacuation (medevac) flights, where air ambulances would transport critically ill or injured patients from accident scenes or smaller clinics to the hospital. It was also used for time-sensitive patient transfers, moving individuals who required a higher level of specialized care to larger medical centers in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City. The heliport's significance was its ability to drastically reduce transport times in life-threatening situations, forming a crucial link in the regional emergency response network.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Its function was exclusively tied to the hospital, which no longer exists. With the site now being converted for county government use, there is no operational requirement for a medical heliport at this location.
