Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 1980. The airport was decommissioned following the construction and activation of the new Creston Municipal Airport (KCSQ) in August 1980.

Reason for Closure

Replacement and obsolescence. Mercer Field was a small, early-generation airfield with unpaved turf runways. It was closed and replaced by the current Creston Municipal Airport (KCSQ), a significantly larger and more modern facility with a 5,000-foot paved runway capable of handling a wider variety of aircraft and all-weather operations. This is a common pattern of infrastructure upgrading rather than a closure due to a specific incident or economic failure.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely reclaimed for agricultural purposes. The land is now privately-owned farmland, and satellite imagery shows cultivated fields where the runways once were. There are no remaining visible traces of hangars, buildings, or the turf runways.

Historical Significance

Mercer Field, more commonly known as the original Creston Municipal Airport, was the primary aviation facility for the city of Creston from at least the 1940s until 1980. It served the general aviation community, supporting private pilots, agricultural spraying operations, and small charter flights. Historical records show it had two turf runways in an 'L' configuration, with the longest being approximately 2,600 feet. It was a vital, albeit basic, transportation link for the community in the post-WWII era before being replaced.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening Mercer Field. The land is in private hands and used for agriculture. The community's aviation needs are fully and more effectively met by the modern Creston Municipal Airport (KCSQ), making a second airport unnecessary and economically unviable.
