Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 27, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 1998-1999. The last known aeronautical chart depicting the airport was the 1998 Omaha Sectional Chart. A 1999 aerial photograph shows the runway marked with closed 'X' symbols, indicating it was no longer operational by that time.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons, specifically urban encroachment and redevelopment. The land, located in a growing suburban area north of Cedar Rapids, became more valuable for commercial and industrial use. The airport was sold and subsequently developed into an industrial park.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and shows no visible trace of the former airport. It is now an industrial and commercial park. The land that once housed the runway and hangars is now occupied by businesses, including Hupp Electric Motors and Hawkeye Fire & Safety, along with their buildings, access roads, and parking lots.

Historical Significance

Sherman Airport was a general aviation airport that served the local community for several decades. It was established sometime between 1960 and 1968. Initially a private field, it later became a public-use airport with the FAA identifier 8C8. It featured a single unpaved turf runway (Runway 18/36) approximately 2,600 feet long. The airport provided services for private pilots, including hangars, tiedowns, fuel (80 & 100 octane), and minor airframe and engine repairs. It was a typical small community airport supporting recreational flying and other general aviation activities.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening Sherman Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed with significant commercial and industrial infrastructure built upon it. Re-establishing an airport at this location would be logistically and financially infeasible.
