Approximately 2017-2019. The airport's owner and operator, Donald Poyner, passed away in late 2016. Satellite imagery shows the runway remained distinct through 2017 but was fully converted to farmland by 2020, indicating operations ceased and the land was repurposed during this period.
The airport was a private grass strip whose existence was tied to its owner. The closure was a direct result of the passing of the owner/operator, Donald Poyner, in December 2016. Without its primary user and caretaker, the family converted the airfield back into productive farmland.
The airport is permanently closed. Current satellite imagery confirms that the land comprising the former runway has been fully converted for agricultural use and is actively farmed. The residence and the building that likely served as a hangar still exist on the property, but the site is no longer recognizable or usable as an airfield.
Poyner Airport was a private-use airfield with no major commercial or military significance. Its importance was personal to its owner, Donald 'Don' Poyner, a lifelong farmer and avid pilot who, according to his obituary, built his own airplane. The airport consisted of a single, well-maintained turf runway (approximately 2,400 feet long, oriented NW/SE) and at least one hangar/shed for aircraft storage. It exclusively handled private general aviation flights for its owner's recreational purposes.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Poyner Airport. The land has been integrated back into the surrounding farmland, and its identity as an airfield has been erased. Reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
